A question about the newline character in KornShell scripts

Dear all,

How can we know in a KornShell script reading a value from the standard input, that the entered value is the newline character? because as far as I know we cannot use \n for pattern matching. For example:

Code:
#!/bin/ksh

print -n "enter your value: "
read VALUE

if [[ $value = # Here I want to write some pattern to match the newline character ]]
then
print "you entered the newline character"
else
print "you didn't enter the newline character"
fi

Thanks in advance,
Smilie

Code:
echo $value | grep -Eq '\n'
if [[ $? -eq 0 ]] ...

But your code won't work with that, since a newline will tell read to end input, and the newline isn't saved to the variable.

Yes, you are right about the fact that \n is eliminated from the end of the input by the read function. However even after running
Code:
...
echo $value | grep -Eq '\n'
...

$? is 1 and not 0, I don't understand why
