appending date at the end of the file
I have file called xx

Now i want to rename this file as xxYYYYMMDD_HHMIAM.xls

Here is my code..


export DATE1=`date +%Y%m%d`
mv xx xx$DATE1

This code renames as xxYYYYMMDD

Now how can i append HHMIAM at the end of the file?

Any help is appreciated...

what's 'HHMIAM'?
look into 'man strftime'.

i want to rename this file as xxYYYYMMDD_HHMIAM.xls

I'm not sure if the file name is xx or xx.xls

IF xx then export DATE1=`date +%Y%m%d_%I%M%p.xls`

mv xx xx${DATE1}

ELSE xx.xls then export DATE1=`date +%Y%m%d_%I%M%p`

file=xx.xls
fname=$(echo $file | cut -d. -f1)
suffix=$(echo $file | cut -d. -f2)
mv $file ${fname}${DATE1}.${suffix}

output: xx20090311_0720PM.xls

%I = hour 01-12
%M = min 00-59
%p = AM or PM
