Using perl grep and awk
I have a script to get server information i wrote in perl because i would like to learn it (and I use it for work). It works great, however i would like to know if there is a good way to reduce the following line.

You can use

model=`hostname`

or

model=`uname -n`

This returns me the actual model of the machine. In this case

ProLiant BL25p G1

Which is what management wants. I was just curious if there was a perl way to do the grep and awk (I know i have to use dmidecode) instead of the shell.

we have a server--- sdetlab01

1)bash-3.00# hostname
sdetlab01
bash-3.00# model=`hostname`
bash-3.00# echo $model
sdetlab01

2)bash-3.00# model1=`uname -a`
bash-3.00# echo $model1
SunOS sdetlab01 5.10 Generic_127111-09 sun4u sparc SUNW,Sun-Fire-15000


i am very much familiar with awk, cut and grep command. not with perl.

Look at the modules on CPAN:

The CPAN Search Site - search.cpan.org

The code you posted is not really perl code. Its just perl running a shell command and getting back the results. I think you do know that but I bring it to your attention just in case.

i was giving solution for unix.
I m not at all aware of dmidecode
