Losing new lines when capturing output to variable

Explain this?

[cmuench@web01 bin]$ ls | grep -e "crd\|cs"
crd
cs
[cmuench@web01 bin]$ CLONES=`ls | grep -e "crd\|cs"`;echo $CLONES;
crd cs

[cmuench@web01 bin]$ CLONES=`ls | grep -e "crd\|cs"`;echo "$CLONES";
crd
cs
# 2
