Shell Programming and Scripting

I am giving my simplified code.

The help needed is: incrementing $3 makes the case1 from 0 to 1. But it is not verified to be true in the if loop. I mean though the case1 has value of 1 it becomes true when compared to if ( $3 == 0 ). I think the case 1 value is defaulting to 0 (at the starting of the program) even if I increment this shell variable inside awk. Please let me know your valuable hint to resolve this.
