Try also awk '{print (NR-1)*5, $0}' file 0 abcd...
Try also awk '{print (NR-1)*5, $0}' file
0 abcd
5 efg
10 hijklm
15 nopqrs
or
awk '$0=(NR-1)*5" " $0' file
