You have Solaris 8 (5.8).

I believe the -h option is Solaris 9 onwards... Use -k if you have an earlier version.

Could you not just unquote at the point you need the variable interpolation:

vlc -I dummy --sout='#transcode{vcodec=mp4v,acodec=mp4a}:std{access=file,mux=mp4,url='$T'} ' "$F"

Apologies. I made the mistake of thinking you could have 'missing' fields in the passwd file, but the same fields are always there, just not always populated as you said.

I think you need to change $NF to the actual number of the last field in the passwd file, for instance $7 in my case...
I don't think all fields have to be present in a passwd file, so $NF may end...
