if you have root file system / and /home in two partitions, you can re-install the s.o. without format /home. As root you can recover all data in /home.

I have already typed in /home/linux 2.6.12 ;) :

make modules
make modules_install


and then followed instructions.I guess at boot time the system try to load a module compiled for the kernel...
