Thanks Auswipe that solved it; I mounted all filesystems and used the 'chsh' utility to change root's shell back to it's original. Thanks to everyone that replied and great forum btw.

I have booted into single user mode but it wont let me do anything. I cant run the 'chsh' command and it wont let me edit anything either. I cant even progress into the lower levels of the file...
