hmm...just tried to uncompress mysql tar file and everything worked fine. But just before I tried uncompressing Cocoon and Lenya and it gave me that message. May be downloaded file was corrupt?

that's what I am doing:
gunzip file.tar.gz

then I get file.tar, I do tar xvf file.tar file uncompresses and I get the message.

Whenever I try to uncompress file.tar.gz I always get message 'tar: directory checksum error'. I think because of this some of the directories might not be uncompressing properly. Why do I get this...

Perderabo was right. In my .profile there was a line pointing to /etc/bin/clearall that contained the message.

I tried to insert my own message into /etc/motd and the message showed up just above the "YO!"

When I telnet to a unix server someone put a stupid message there:
