I have a directory "/var/spool/sw" which is supposed to be a "Depot" directory. Turns out it is not and when using the swreg command "swreg -l /var/spool/sw" I get errors in part ERROR...

turns out it was a bad tape drive

I have had the drive changed and I get the same error. these drives are old and have not been used in several years :(

tar t... did have the light on the external drive blink before the error was displayed.
tar cvf ... was used
I took the tape out and put it back in (rewind) and still got a read error.

So, I used a head cleaning tape (new) and used a new tape and got the same error. I even changed out the tape drive unit and still got the error Tar: tape read error
