Short answer is to go redownload your update package to make sure the filesets in it were built at a later date than what you have on the machine.

Suggest you learn the version you are going to be supporting. No point in learning 7 (for example) if you‘re machines are 5.x

Re ssh and telnet - from the local console check lssrc -a and make sure nothing is inactive that should be running. Also check to see if you can ssh and telnet out.
