found the problem...
in the beginning of my script I issued IFS to split on periods and I don't know why (I know you guys do :) ) but I had to set IFS to " " i.e. a space in order to make it work

I've come across a problem that I can't solve. Its as simple as it can get.
I want to substitute spaces in a string with dots e.g.
i am a string
i.am.a.string

I've tried examples...
