Hi

Can anyone help me with a query? Is a password mandatory for the root user. I'm studying for Solaris SCSAS and one of the answers implies that it is not.

I've googled but not getting much...

I just had a look at some other questions and none of them end in a period....so the dot at the end of the above question is intentional!

I just created a file starting with "f" and ending in "." and it does appear to change the behaviour...but can you tell me why that is?

The actual question also has a point/dot at the end!...

"None of the files are displayed as the shell has matched the pattern f*, so the command has no output to check against"

I changed the question a bit but I don't think it would have made any...

No, not homework.... but I don't agree with one of the answers in SCSAS Unix associate sample questions. I have contacted Sun but they just reply with some crap. I have run the command on a BSD...

Funnily enough I tried it out on a Unix box but couldn't get it to return either one.

okay, I'm back to square one. The official answer to the question says that the following statement will return 'Jolly Brewers'....but how can it when pipe represents OR?

egrep...

So I was wrong! I thought the pipe in:

egrep '(Jolly)|(Brewers)' public

meant OR...i.e Jolly OR Brewers....and not both. I guess it must be the brackets that change the meaning slightly
