Did you ftp it in binary mode? Getting .tar.gz file in ascii or auto mode also sometime cause problem. Moreover what is size of your tar.gz file? File size limit can also create problem.

If your process is running on foreground Ctrl + C can kill existing process.
Or use ps -ef | grep "Script Name".
then use kill -9 "Process ID".
Or you can use ps -ef | more to find all process...
