awk '/EUMP2/ {print $6}' File1 >> File2

which should append to file2, correct.

How do I get it to append but first add a space.

That didn't work either but I did try to run a simple 'read' command and it wont work. Maybe thats the issue.

there is no nawk, but there is a gawk, and i tried that but nothing is doing. I am using a government super computer called cobalt. I think it uses SGI propack 5. I dont know anything else.
