lines=`ls -l | tr -s [:space:] | cut -d ' ' -f 5 | wc -l`
lines=`expr $lines - 1`

echo "Fifth column of 'ls -l' command:::"
ls -l | tr -s [:space:]...

What can we use instead of 'awk' to do the same?? cut???
