was thnking the best way would be to use sed to put each character on its own line then pipe sort but I can't get the sed command to work

yeah tryting to come up with the sed pipeline that will show the number of the 26 letters in the file
not how many A's, B's, ect but if abcdef, ect are in the file so it would be a number of 26 or...
