I am trying to hit the internet from my unix box (sun 250e), but cannot reach any external IP addresses.

I've updated the hosts and resolv.conf files with what i assume is the right...

I have a new SUN server from a sister company, and have been able to network it, and ping the server...however i can't telnet into the box.

I was able to shut the box down, and restart it. There was corruption on my / filesystem. Cleaned this up and and now able to telnet in.

I am having a problem logging into my SUN box.

When i telnet to the box, i dont get as far as the login/password bit - instead i have the following appear on my screen:

telnetd: could not...

Is it possible to redirect the output from 'tar xvf' to another directory?

The taped tar image is extracting to my / dircetory - even though i'm running the command from /backups.

I applied patches, installed GNUtar, tried other backup/restore commands...but not joy!

The tapes where created on another unix box by another unix guy...who has since left. from a brief convo with him, the tapes were supposedly created with TAR.

Tried the cpio option, but equally got errors:

cpio: I/O error on "input", errno 12, Not enough space
1 errors

i'm not that clued up on this - but i'm thinking that it is...

The tape was created using TAR.

I can issue commands to the device, and have read tapes...just these few (which conatin the most valuable data) are the 'corrupt' ones.

Initally a blocksize...

I have been attempting to read a DLT tape, but encountered problems. I have applied patches from SUN that 'resolve' known problems with tape reading etc...but still the error!

Techsupport reckon...

I have stipulated the blocksize using the b option, but am stlll getting this "tar: directory checksum error".

Any ideas of how to solve this part?
