I would suggest that you backup your home directory, and shared folders, and prefereably do an install of CentOS / RHEL on the same machine...

That is what I have moved to from first RedHat 7, through to 9, then Mandrake 9 through 9.2, then Suse 9.3 to 10.2, and now PCLinux.

What output do you get from dmesg when you plug in your external hdd?? Does it load the scsi emulation drivers?
