the date field could be any date/time , I need a shell that works out the date + 10 minutes . I should have explained this.

I have a file with date and time in it YYYYMMDDHHMISS

cat payt_date.dat
20031007201031

and I need to add 10minutes

Any ideas?

I don't think it is a problem with the size as we have files larger than 2 gigs .

I have also tried cat file |gunzip >a but this fails with the same error. I remember getting this error on...

While trying to gunzip afile I get the following error message

ls -l UK_US_02310.dat.gz
