what did i get into..... geez. It drive me crazy!!!!

Now that i typed in: tar -cv /dev/ast0 ~
i got the respond back saying.....

tar: can't open /dev/rsa0 : Device not configured

when i do dmesg | more I could see the dev ast0

ast0: TAPE <HP COLORADO 5GB > at ata1-salve using PI04

but when i do df -k all i could see is the hard drive device such as

Ok, here where i stand.....
when i issued "dmesg | more" I saw the UNIX recognized HP Colorado tape drive as "ast0".

ast0: TAPE <HP COLORADO 5GB> at ata1-slave using PI04

Oooops...! You are right, it was CD ROM device. Not the tape backup device. :-) forgive me, i am a UNIX dummie here.
But anyway, can you or anyone help me how to create tape backup?

I installed a Tape backup on my Unix Box. And now how can i create tape backup. When i iussed a command df -k i could see the tape device there (/dev/acd0c).

I am using FreeBSD Unix version running on I386 PC box. My IDE tape device is made by HP (Colorado 5GB).

Darn.... i feel so stupid :(
Now .. that i can mount the rf0 device which is floppy drive A. But when i issued copy command as follows:

cp /mnt/rfd0/mytext.tar /tmp/mytext.tar

it give me a...

when i do df -k
all i got is:

/dev/ad0s1a 49583 26929 18688 59% /
/dev/ad0s1f 3949125 185473 3448622 5% /usr
/dev/ad0s1e 19815 ...

when i issued the command df -k all i see is info from (ad0s1a, ad0s1f, ad0s1e), devices which is the hard drive but nothing from floppy drive device rfd0. So what could be wrong, what did i do...

i followed your instruction (thehoghunter). i issued a command df -k but i didn't see floppy device (rfd0). except for the hard drive (ad0s1a, 1f, 1e).

It strange because i could format floppy...

By the way, i am using FreeBsD Unix version. As i have tried both of your suggestions, still did not work. This is what i did.

i logged in as root. Then i typed in

# cp...
