192 is usually an internal IP address. So you probably aren't connected to the internet directly. You need a resolv.conf file with a DNS entry in it. Then you need to be able to ping the DNS...

You can't change the root password, without knowing the root password in the first place. It prompts you for the old one before you can put in the new one.

You could try using ACLs if your OS supports it.

Edit the password file and create the home directories manually, or use NIS.

fuser works as well on the device file, like
fuser /dev/cotodo
depending on your unix flavour
It will give you the process locking your device.

You don't need another video card, you need another monitor cable. Take that one back, tell them exactly what you have, and if they can't make up a cable that works go to another vendor.

How did you change the root password if you couldn't login as root? Does that mean su is working? Or did you remotely login?
