Linux Server Outage

We have Linux Server crash on last Friday of 25th It's is running on IBM x3650 hardware. We Have Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 5.9 (Tikanga) running on top of it.

We were told to do Root Cause Analysis. So, Apart from looking /var/log/messages, Where can we check to get details on server crash?

You may want to look at enabling the kdump crash recovery service. We make it a point to enable this on critical systems as it allows more extensive troubleshooting than with the normal methods (looking through logs). Also, if you have support via Red Hat, you would be able to send them the dump for analysis.

Log files are not going to tell you much about kernel crashes. A crashed kernel writes no files. This is to prevent it from potentially messing up your disk.

The messages may appear on the root terminal if they haven't scrolled off already.
