hey, what could be the patternmatch for file having this format

File_20121212.csv

where 20121212 = yyyymmdd format , it can be any date format

File_20131203150229.csv

where 20131203150229 = yyyymmddhhmiss format

any help will be appreciated.

Do you you intend a polite greeting rather than just "hey"?

It would be good to know what are you trying to achieve. Is is just to match the file name with ls or something, or perhaps within a script to use it as an input file? The context could greatly affect the answer you get.

Have a read of the man pages for grep too. They discuss pattern matching, or better still, get the O'Reilly book sed & awk. Mine is ISBN 1-56592-225-5, but probably superseded by now. That heas great depth about pattern matching. I'm still learning new tricks.

Your requirement is very vague. For example, the command:

Code:

date "+File_Today's month is %B and today's day of week is %A.csv"

creates a filename containing a formatted date such as

Code:

File_Today's month is May and today's day of week is Wednesday.csv

but I have no idea if this is what you're looking for. If so, you can use the file matching pattern:

Code:

File_*.csv

to match filenames of this form whether or not the string between "File_" and ".csv" represents a date.
