Working with FTP

Hi all,
i am using fedora 11,and want to make my system as ftp server. I have installed vsftp package and vsftpd daemon is also running.
Can i access my files from outer world i.e. internet using ftp? How can i do that?
i started vsftpd daemon and tried to access server from other system like ftp://<static_ip> , but its giving error. Am i hitting the server in wrong way?
what should i do to configure my server. what are the necessary changes i need to do in vsftpd.conf files?
I have already changed 'anonymous_enable=YES'
Do i need to install other different package?
I hope you are getting what i need to communicate.
Thanks

Well, what is the ftp client you are using? Have you opened ftp related ports on firewall i.e iptables?

Accessing your FTP server from Internet can be done of course. You have to enable NAT in your router and for that you have to consult your router's manual.

I am using Suse Linux 11 and these are my settings:

Code:
write_enable=YES # enable any form of FTP write command

local_enable=YES # if you want local users to use FTP

local_umask=000 # not a very secure setting, but you can use 022

chroot_local_user=YES #I jailed local users to their home directories so they dont go about messing files

chroot_list_enable=YES #if this is YES, then u need the chroot list file

chroot_list_file=/etc/vsftpd.chroot_list #put all your local users that you'd want to be able to use FTP here

and you disable all anonymous login, downloads,uploads

anonymous_enable=NO
#anon_world_readable_only=YES
#anon_upload_enable=YES
#anon_umask=022
#anon_mkdir_write_enable=YES
#anon_other_write_enable=YES
#chown_uploads=YES
#chown_username=whoever

I log my FTP activity separately from syslog, so it goes to two different log files

log_ftp_protocol=YES #Uncomment this to log all FTP requests and responses.

xferlog_enable=YES #Activate logging of uploads/downloads

vsftpd_log_file=/var/log/vsftpd.log

xferlog_file=/var/log/xferlog

dual_log_enable=YES

idle_session_timeout=21600 #these are custom settings because the customer wanted it that way
data_connection_timeout=86400 #these are custom settings because the customer wanted it that way

ascii_upload_enable=YES     #ASCII mode file transfer
ascii_download_enable=YES  #ASCII mode file transfer

hope this helps
