As a workaround for now you could use public DNS servers in /etc/resolv.conf
8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 are google's anycasted DNS servers.

Also you could paste your options {} section of named.conf as well as bind version # for us to have a look at.

I can telnet to my DNS server from the client over port 22 & 53 but I am unable to telnet/connect from my DNS server to the client. May this be the cause of the issue?

I took your advise and added the extra domain into the named.conf file "allow query { extra domain; }" and it worked - thanks for your help!!

I can now resolve in both directions and dig works.

I don't think that would be this problem, but another problem, sure. We communicate and get a REFUSED from the DNS server so communication is happening for DNS. The server just doesn't allow the query.
