Reinstalling the PAM package should not affect existing usernames and passwords. But, to be safe enough, backup /etc/shadow, /etc/passwd, /etc/group files. Also, backup /etc/nsswitch.conf file.

Do you know where I could download PAM rpm's or a way to install those rpm's using redhat installation cd's in rescue mode?

If you have the installation disk, you may install PAM from there. The RHEL version you are using is not supported anymore, so you may not find the PAM RPM from repository. Disk is the only option you have.

do you know how to install specific rpm packages from cd in rescue mode? I looked into the redhat docs online but all they have explained is reinstall boot loader.

Sure, here you go:

1. Pop the CD into your drive and mount it:
Code:
mount -t iso9660 /dev/sr0 /mnt

2. cd into the /mnt directory and find the PAM RPM package:
Code:
cd /mnt; find ./ -name "pam*.rpm" -print

3. Once you get the RPM, cd to that directory and install it:
Code:
cd /mnt/path/to/package
rpm -ivh pam*.rpm

when I try to install the rpm files they give me various dependency errors. I am getting this error because I have 5 cds for redhat OS or I need to remove those dependencies first?

Yes, you need to install the dependencies first.
