Fedora vs Redhat

Hi,

can i say technically there is no difference in:

package management (installation/removal/updating)
commands

between redhat and fedora?

in redhat if I am not a official subscriber, I can never do commands like:
yum search/update/install... unless I have the license

how does it look like in fedora?
can I yum search/update/install freely? it will connect to rhn? and then freely download packages and updates
thanks
messi

Fedora is a community distribution sponsored, but not owned, by Red Hat. It started when the original Red Hat distribution was discontinued in favor of RHEL. Personally, I see it as a kind of testbed/incubator for RHEL as far as software is concerned. But their repositories are completely separated, meaning Fedora doesn't use software from RHN and vice versa.

If you're looking for a free variant of RHEL, take a look at Scientific Linux or CentOS.

thanks, why i asked is that my background is debian and now due to work environment and my job responsibilities i have to switch to redhat. but you know what? I hate to be refused every single time when im trying to update/install a software on my OS like "red hat". of course i have one month evaluation one in which i have access to RHN but what about later on?! I dont wanna keep looking for rpms every here and there! and at the end what? it tells me the dependency issues of packages exist and then i go crazy and give up. this can be easily resolved with yum! but yum only will work for one month for me. after that i should manually install packages..which I hate (do you have any solution for this? that i can keep my rhel 6 and even get ready for exams in 6 months...to sit for RHCSA)...

the above thought made me look for similar but free OS, that I can keep up my skills updated and keep practicing at home...

so in fedora i can update/install using yum? easily? with no issue? anyways is yum working there in fedora?

if fedora is free and things are fine with that I would really prefer not to go for any other distro!

cheers,
messi

Yes, Fedora uses yum. But Fedora isn't completely compatible with RHEL, so if you're training for a certification, use CentOS or Scientific Linux instead, as they are RHEL - the proprietary stuff (Logos, closed source software bundled with RHEL, ...)

wow! every day I get to know something new! i used to think fedora is compatible with RHEL.
ok let me have a look at the distros..that you said...as far as they are free then they should be fine.
