List of all environment variables?

Hey all, I am simply trying to find a listing of all of the default BASH environment variables in RHEL 5.4. Namely, I need to find what the path variable is for libraries since one of my applications doesn't see a module that it needs to run. So far I've seen $LD_PRELOAD, $LD_LIBRARY_PATH and $LIBPATH. Googling for a list of environment variables just turns up a ton of pages on how to set them, which doesn't help a whole lot.

env will print out everything that's currently set.

Is there a list of all of the default system variables, including those that aren't set? For instance EDITOR is usually not set but is a system variable (or else its set to emacs? I can't remember).

Who's to say unset things don't default to unset?

If you're looking for the library path, you've already found it. export LD_LIBRARY_PATH="/path/to/dir/" will allow programs you run after that to find shared libraries under /path/to/dir. LD_PRELOAD is also a real option but acts a little differently, allowing you to partially override libraries it already finds. I haven't heard of LIBPATH.

None of these default to set since setting them for the entire system is likely to cause security holes or bad side-effects. People locking themselves out of glibc, and so forth.

I don't know of any giant list of everything the system uses, because there's no limit. Any installed program might have a special environment option they check.

LD_LIBRARY_PATH worked like a charm. I really appreciate it. Thank you!
