static route not working on startup

Hi,

Using Centos, under /etc/rc5.d, I wrote a quick script to add my static route when the server gets rebooted. The script doesn't get executed. I did set the permission to 777. After I reboot the server, if I execute, it works manually.

I do this all the time on Solaris and never had any issues. But this is first time doing this on Linux. Any idea? Thanks for your help.

Are you booting to run level 5?

How do you know it's not getting executed? maybe it's indeed running but failing somewhere. (?)

What are the contents of the script?

when I do who -br, I see it the default run level is 5 . so I created the script under /etc/rc5.d
called the file as S99staticroute

Quote:
route add -net 196.8.118.0 netmask 255.255.255.240 gw 10.65.8.6
that's all I have on the staticroute file. I am not sure if this is the way to add static route on Linux. But I do this on Solaris and works.

Perhaps it doesn't know where "route" is? Try using full paths:

Code:
/sbin/route add -net ...

Also, there should be a file called "static-routes" in /etc/sysconfig. If not, you can simply create one, and, using the correct syntax, make the runlevel unimportant.

it should look like this:
Code:
any net 196.8.118.0 netmask 255.255.255.240 gw 10.65.8.6

I think /etc/sysconfig/static-routes is deprecated since RHEL 3.

Newer versions use /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/route-interface

RHEL 5 docs do not mention anything about the first method either. Smilie
