Hi,

please help me with below question

i am executing the below command from command line

Code:

perl -e '($hi)=glob("nosum*"); print "$hi"';

As i have nosum_website.sh file in current directory it gave the following output

 $ perl -e '($hi)=glob("nosum*"); print "$hi"';
nosum_website.sh$

but when use the same command with double quotes i am not getting any output, may i know why is this happening and how to make it print with double quotes

$ perl -e "($hi)=glob(\"nosum*\"); print \"$hi\"";
jena  $

1. From what I've seen, looks like it depends on OS/shell. For example, it works for me when I try the same on my redhat linux/GNU bash 3.2.25.

2. However, on my windows command prompt (with ActiveState perl), I can't use single quotes for perl command line code. For example, this doesn't work - perl -e 'print "hello"', but this works perl -e "print \"hello\""

3. Moreover, is there any particular reason why you want to have double quotes as in the latter option?

I'm assuming this is Bourne shell.

Like in Perl, $ also means variable in Bourne shell. It substitutes $hi immediately, before the program is run. If you want to feed the $ into perl, you must escape them too.

Bourne shell never substitutes anything inside single quotes however, which is why they worked.
