pthread_exit query

pthread_exit query
Hi,
I am new to multithreaded programming. When creating a thread to run a specific function, does the function need to have a pthread_exit ?

Is pthread_exit analogous to a return in a function?

Not really. Pthread_exit() allows you to specify an optional termination status parameter. This optional parameter is typically returned to threads "joining" the terminated thread.

There is a good tutorial on pthreads at https://computing.llnl.gov/tutorials/pthreads/ which is worth reading.

However, unless the thread created has the detached attribute, if the main code does not join the thread, thread resources are not returned to the system. So, while not required, it is almost always a very good idea.

So not joining terminated threads is somewhat analogous to creating a zombie processes, which is also a bad idea.
