I have a while loop like so:

how can I pass that into a pthread_create()?

I was thinking ...

the last arg of pthread_create is a void * - meaning it is the address of any kind of variable.

Depending on how file1 is declared your thread code has to turn a void * into the correct datatype. There are a lot of problems if the data in "file1" is subsequently written to again.
