[:digit:]

Hi,

Does anybody know what the below means:

[:digit:]

I have a program containing the following and am trying to understand what it does:

Code:
temp=$(echo $count2 | tr -cd [:digit:])

Cheers

It's a POSIX character class that basically means "Any digit between 0 and 9".

As for precisely what it does, it returns whatever digits are in the string "count2" to "temp". If count2 is "123AB45C6D" then temp would be "123456". To see why, type "man tr".
