prolems with pipes and popen in c

Hi!
I'm trying to write a c program. The child process must transmit to the parent a file name and the parent must count the lines from the file and return te result to the child. Here is what i've done. It doesn't stop running, I guess. I'm sorry if it's an ugly code, i'm new at this stuff, intern process communication.
I really need help.
thanks a lot!!!

sorry, I forgot to attach the code:
Code:
int main()
{
 int f[2], h[2];
 int buf2=0, buf3=0, pid;
 char buf[5], fis[]="ceva";
 buf[0]='\0';
 if(pipe(f)<0)
   printf("nu s-a putut deschide pipe f\n");
 if(pipe(h)<0)
   printf("nu s-a putut deschide pipe g\n");
 pid=fork();
 if(pid==0)
  {
   printf("suntem in procesul fiu cu pidul %d: \n", getpid());
   close(f[0]);
   close(h[1]);
   printf("%s", fis);
   printf("\n");
   write(f[1], &fis, sizeof(fis));
   close(f[1]);
   read(h[0], &buf3, sizeof(int));
   printf("%d\n", buf3);
   close(h[0]);
   exit(0);
  }
 else
  {
   printf("suntem in procesul parinte cu pidul: %d\n ", getpid());
   close(f[1]);
   close(h[0]);
   read(f[0], &buf, sizeof(buf));
   close(f[0]);
   //buf[strlen(buf)+1]='\0';
   printf("%s", buf);
   printf("\n");
   FILE *g=popen("wc -l $buf", "r");
   fscanf(g, "%d", &buf2);
   pclose(g);
   write(h[1], &buf2, sizeof(int));
   close(h[1]);
  }

 return 0;
}

The popen call is wrong...$buf will not be substituted as this is not shell scripting so use sprintf to build your command first before sending it to popen...
Code:
char cmd[100];
sprintf(cmd, "wc -l %s", buf);
FILE *g=popen(cmd, "r");
