I suspect your editor adding some alien characters to the files you viewed...
It is a good practice and saves a lot of trouble to ONLY use vi when editing anything system... So even if it were not...

passwd -r [nis[plus] or ldap] -e

updates files other than /etc/passwd, passwd -e -r nis is what I would expect, but I don't know for sure how your system is configured.
