Your regex in first post could work with correct locale, example:

$ LC_ALL=C
$ [[ "$XX" =~ [A-Za-z0-9_] ]] && echo ok
$ LC_ALL=fr_FR.UTF-8
$ [[ "$XX" =~ [A-Za-z0-9_] ]] && echo ok...
