Assuming you can't find ksh93 on your computer, here is another method using "bc" which causes it to output either 9999 or 8888...

You are probably using the default Bourne shell...
You are probably using the default Bourne shell which does not support non-integers. Can you use the Korn shell i.e. ksh?
