is this possibly a zone or LDOM?
If so the procedure is slightly different depending on which level you are at.
if it's a zone you can set it at the LDOM level by doing zoneconfig -z...

try this: ifconfig bge1 your.ip.here.xxx...
try this:
ifconfig bge1 your.ip.here.xxx netmask 255.255.0.0 up
