As I just wrote, the OP is running on SPARC so there is no GRUB involved. To boot in single user mode, type Stop-A to go to the openboot prompt then type boot -s

I think you dont need to have a solaris-8 CDROM for that.

try using

installboot /usr/platform/`uname -i`/lib/fs/ufs/bootblk \
/dev/rdsk/c1t0d0s0

replace the rdsk path with your new disk...
