I was looking at Izy100's post on Redhat and Solaris. It was closed as a violation of the "No OS flamewars" rule.

I agree 100% that we don't want to end up with Slashdot or OSNews style flamewars over which OS is best. However, this one seemed ok to me. He was asking a specific question about running a cluster with Oracle on it using both OSes and asking if anybody had tried it before. Asking other members their experience with a specific package like that on a couple different OSes before you decide which to implement seems like a legit request. If this question was a violation of the rules, how could he go about getting that kind of information?

Comparing Red Hat to Solaris is not the right way to pose a question in these forums. Some people love Red Hat. Some people love Solaris.

We are not here to support these types of discussions. I closed the thread, not only because of this rule violation, but the fact that the poster seeming did not care to read the rules in the first place.

Red Hat vs. Solaris.... really has very little merit to begin a thread.... the rest of the post was good material.

As far as "how to get this information'... the world is a lot bigger than UNIX.COM - the poster has lots of options.... including Slashdot - who thrives on conflict and ****.

The post in question could generate useful responses, and I don't see it as a troll or anything. But it could generate a flamewar just as easily.

My feeling is that izy100 could pose a question to obtain the info he needs without violating the rule. For instance, "We are thinking about running Oracle on some Redhat systems. Does anyone have any experiences that they can share? Or any other thoughts?" Oracle and Redhat may not be a common combo, so the query may not be flooded with replies, but the was true from the start.
