I'm an engineer at a large software company. Earlier today I googled "glibc detected double free or corruption" and wound up on one of your threads, *** glibc detected *** double free or corruption: 0x40236ff4 ***.

I was helping out a female coworker who was looking over my shoulder. I'm glad she left before I scrolled down because at the bottom of the page, there was a Flash ad for Evony. The ad panned across a woman wearing nuthin' but sheer bra and panties (see https://www.unix.com/members/jcadow-a...-unix-com.html).

Extremely mild fare considering what's on the web, but I could have had sexual harrassment charges filed against me thanks to that ad. Do you guys want unix.com to be a reference for professionals? If so you need to review more carefully the content of the ads you display on your pages.

Waddya say? Should I block unix.com when I'm at work or will it be safe to come back tomorrow?

There are 2 quite simple remedies:But since you're a member already, I'm sure that a) won't be a problem.

On second thought, I am going to do something I don't really agree with, and try to block these Evony ads that some people find offensive.

I checked and Evony.com is already on one block list (before):

I am going to look into what the issue is...... I can live without Evony ads and if others find them offensive, then we can try to block them... again!

OK...... (sigh!)

Against my personal distaste for censorship and against my personal disbelief that the Evony ads are offensive and my complete disinterest in religious arguments (since we all know that religious beliefs account for most of the hate and violence in the world), I have done something I normally would not do.

I have attempted to block all the Evony ads, everywhere. I guess it will take a few hours for the changes and filters to take effect.

Please post back if you see any after 24 hours, with screenshots.

Are you sure that this is the same person who got banned for objecting the ads based on religion? Because from my point neither the writing style, nor the IP match up.

Also, with the poster being from the USA, the objection might be based on cultural, rather than religious issues. Plus, I wouldn't put it behind them (the US, that is) to sue for sexual harassment faster than you could say "On what grounds".

P.S.: Am I the only one to think it strange that the largest producer of pornography and teen pregnancies are the "prude" US of A?

No, I'm not sure. In fact, I think it might be two different people, which was influential in my decision to block the Evony ads.

Personally speaking, (edit: almost) every movie I watch on HBO or Star Movies has much, much more suggestive images than the sexy Evony ads; however, since it seems two US posters from companies have objected, why not block them if we can (which I have tried to do today).

Funny, the other day I watched "Planet Terror" on Star Movies and watched very sexy women in skimpy clothes battle zombies with giant pus balls on their faces and severed body parts and guts flying, and I thought it was both sick and funny. Movies and TV are so violent, suggestive, ugly and weird that I guess we become used to it.

Actually, if a user finds ads like the Evony ads objectionable in the work place, I understand since the world is out-of-control and extremism has become the norm. As you said, perhaps one person is trying to show someone something on the net and another uses an image to make the other persons life miserable.

We do live in very strange times......

Thanks for the great work that the moderators here do. I for one agree, censorship is a personal thing, but I appreciate the approach that you've taken. Thanks again for the good job that is done here and for the quality that is maintained on this site.

I am not into censorship or religious arguments; however, I do want to make sure we remain a "family friendly" reference in the workplace. No profanity, flames, hate, and overly sexual or provocative images.

I have turned around 180 degrees on this topic after getting two complaints from members in the work place.
