Proper "trackback" usage
I looked through the FAQ, did some Google searching of Unix.com and couldn't come up with what the "trackback" does. I've seen similar features on other sites where reference links are specified but they show up with the post.

What is the purpose of "trackback" links?

Where do they show up in the thread?

Well, there's the Wikipedia on Trackbacks and there's our own entry on Track/Link/Pingbacks. But you're correct, the later doesn't show up in the FAQ.

That's a bit different and useful for communicating sites. Two things come to mind...
  1. I'll always put the links in the post even if they are any kind of Linkback.
  2. Expectation != implementation. Smilie

Even if they might be some kind of linkback: the TrackBack URLs are not visible in the thread, or even anywhere else. And most links that you post here probably won't understand the XML sent to them.
