Mac OS X 10.5: Unable to restart or shut down when using Fast User Switching

When attempting to restart or shut down your computer (while multiple users are logged in using Fast User Switching), you will receive this alert, which is normal: "There are currently logged in users who may lose unsaved changes if you restart this computer." To proceed, you must enter a name and password belonging to an administrator account. However, if you enter a valid administrator user's name and password, then click on the Restart or Shut Down button, you may unexpectedly receive this message: "Invalid user name or password. Please try again."

NAME

       gdm-restart, gdm-safe-restart, gdm-stop - stop or restart GDM

SYNOPSIS

       gdm-restart

       gdm-safe-restart

       gdm-stop

DESCRIPTION

       gdm-restart stops and restarts GDM by sending a HUP signal to the GDM daemon. This command immediately terminates all sessions and logs out
       users currently logged in with GDM.

       gdm-safe-restart stops and restarts GDM by sending a USR1 signal to the GDM daemon. GDM is restarted as soon as all users log out.

       gdm-stop stops GDM by sending a TERM signal to the GDM daemon.

FILES

       The following files are used by this application:

       /usr/bin/gdm-restart    Executable to stop and restart GDM
