Date to epoch problem

Hi all,

In terminal when I enter:

Code:
date -j -f date -j -f "%Y/%m/%d %T" "2011/09/30 13:00:00" +"%s"

The output is:
Quote:
1317380400

When I put 2011/09/30 in var A, and I subsequently enter:

Code:
date -j -f date -j -f "%Y/%m/%d %T" "${A} 13:00:00" +"%s"

The output is:
Quote:
1317380400

When I put 13:00:00 in var B, and I subsequently enter:

Code:
date -j -f date -j -f "%Y/%m/%d %T" "2011/09/30 ${B}" +"%s"

The output is:
Quote:
1317380400

HOWEVER, when I put both the date and the time in a variable, like this:

Code:
date -j -f date -j -f "%Y/%m/%d %T" "${A} ${B}" +"%s"

I receive the following error:

Quote:
)arning: Ignoring 1 extraneous characters in date string (

This also happens when I put both the date and the time in one variable.

Does anybody know how I can get around this problem?

Thanks a lot!

Kind regards,

M0s..

Hi.

I don't have this problem.

Code:
$ date -j -f date -j -f "%Y/%m/%d %T" "${A} ${B}" +"%s"
1317380400

$ echo $A $B
2011/09/30 13:00:00

$ system_profiler SPSoftwareDataType

That's really strange!

Code:
20:41:23 ~ > system_profiler SPSoftwareDataType
Software:

Do you have any suggestions??

Keine Ahnung, as the Germans would say!

From the message (")arning: Ignoring 1 extraneous characters in date string (") I could only guess that you have a hidden (control) character present.

Is this part of a script? If so, what is the output of:
Code:
cat -v file
od -c file

Thanks for your reply.

It is part of a script. I don't observe anything strange when I do cat -v file.

When I do "od -c file" I get:

Code:
(...)
0003100 . / \ : & / 6 ' ` \n \t \t \t \t E p
0003120 o c h _ e v e n t = ` d a t e
0003140 - j - f d a t e - j - f
0003160 " % Y / % m / % d % T " "
0003200 $ { E p o c h _ e v e n t _ d a
0003220 t e } $ { E p o c h _ e v e n
0003240 t _ t i m e } " + " % s " ` \n
0003260 \n \t \t \t \t \n \t \t \t i f [ " $
(...)

does this look wrong to you?

Thanks!

In your original post, you said "However". Was what happened before the "however" also part of the script, or before (i.e. typed from the command line)?

i.e. there's no compelling reason for a command-line version to work, and the script one not to.

At the same time the "od -c" output looks wrong. Can you "cat" the file, and post it here?

Hi Scott,

I wanted to send you the script, but I can't PM you since I only have three posts. Is there a way to send you the script?

Kind regards,

M0s..
