I actually use 4 text editors on my Mac. When I want to do serious coding I use Vim. When I want to jot something down real quick, I use TextEdit, because it's right on my dock and I can bring it up instantly. I sometimes use ed, just for fun. Recently I started using Emacs, though not for text editing. I use it to play games.

I have a love/hate relationship with vi. In many ways a despise it, but it works decently and it is found on practically ever system you touch. It is worth knowing how to use it's basic functions. More advanced functions are harder to remember how to use and are not obvious (at least to me.)

Hi,
I am a newbie and use vi. I make it to work for basic needs. But i wonder how to code full length commercial grade shell/c programs without an IDE. Does it not make it slow and difficult to code and align the code for readability just using vi alone?
Would it not speed up development, if you use some kind of IDE like eclipse?

i use vi for quick editing because its already on our solaris box. For programming i use window editor (crimson editor or ultraedit) because its easier for me write long programs and just copy paste the code on the solaris box.
