vi

99% of the time 'vi'.

Used to use 'pico' few years back during school.

I use nedit most of the time, it's a little easier to use than vi (not as many "hot keys" to memorize), but can at times not be quite as robust, especially when dealling with large files. I guess that it really depends on what one is using it for, and one's preference, but both are good.

Well, if you're the kind of user that finds himself doing the same edit to 99 lines and wondering if he should write a perl script to do this for you, vi may be the editor for you... Instead of the limited search/search-replace functionality many editors have, vi supports full-blown regular expression search and search-replace. It's got many little features that let you do more work with less keystrokes but regexes is the "wow" one.

Vi is installed on virtually any unix system. Its extremely fast, scriptable, and very feature rich. It has a plethora of commands which support common editing tasks when coding.

Most of that can be said for emacs as well I guess, but vi users often see emacs as bloated. Anyway, the choice between the two is a matter of taste I guess, and people tend to stick to what they are used to...

Hit the nail right on the head Smilie

1) I learned pico/nano first, and will likely always prefer it (even tho I know how to use vi/notepad/gedit/kedit/wordpad/ted/insert-editor-here).

2) I learned debian first, and will likely always prefer it (even tho I know red hat/centos/suse/slackware/arch/gentoo/etc).

4) I learned windows 95 first, and will always prefer it's interface (my winxp box is set to the old interface now and i won't be upgrading it unless i can get my old interface on windows7)
