I Agree.

I use EditPlus for editing multiple files. But use vi when editing scripts right on the Unixbox. It kind funny sometimes in EditPlus I end up typing ":wq" when im done, but that doesnt work :P

vi all the way. I've never used UNIX until I started taking 'real' CS courses at university these last couple of years. My prof used to say he'd beat me every time he caught me using nano.

I think he was joking. I think, anyway.... Smilie

Funny you say that. In 1982, I got my first exposure to Emacs on a MULTICS system but never really learned or mastered it. In 1985 I got another chance with Emacs. On one platform, it was too big and slow in those days, but a few years later I got a chance to really start working with it, and it was then that I fell in love with it. I had used Vi going back to 1982, and ed at that same time. Vi won over ed, but I do use both ed and sed for certain special tasks.

It was edt emulation that helped me get over the hump to learn Emacs at my own pace and use edt emulation in the meantime. I ended up writing and modifying a WPS keypad emulator to learn Emacs Lisp, and also because I happened to have a keyboard with WPS etchings instead of EDT etchings or just numbers.

These days I have a few function keys that I set up for Emacs functions I use often, but for the most part, I either know the commands I want to run or at the very least I know where to find them.

Emacs definitely gets the job done, especially for tasks where you have to repeat the same thing over and over. A quick macro saves the day, then repeat the macro 20,000 times and the work is done in seconds!

Vi is extremely powerful, no doubt about it. To me, editor surveys boil down to finger speed, and Vi wins those touch typing contests every time, or feature sets, and Emacs can do it all - including pretending to be Vi!

Nano has its followers because of its simplicity and small size and the others have their devoted following, but Vi and Emacs are just far more ubiquitous. I see Vi and Vim winning most editor surveys, and I do not expect anything different here, though I have a soft spot for Emacs myself.
