For those of us in a mixed environment including Windows boxen, I highly recommend Notepad++ - it's fast, powerful, and open source. I use it on a nearly-hourly basis.

I really love VI, but lately I've been trying to get familiar with emacs. I like it so far, but VI just comes so naturally to me now. Even with Word and
Excel I'll catch myself trying to use "J" and "K" to scroll up and down!

i love vi, i use vi in both windows and linux
->single key stroke can do wonderful work
->It would definitely accelerate your development speed
->you will start realizing that, the commands in unix family have a certain similarities,like sed , grep , ed , ex, awk, perl.
->exploiting the ed inside vi is very good exercise, and it makes you,very comfortable with sed , egrep etc
->you can get very nice plugins from welcome home : vim online
->once you start using vi, you will try do everything inside it.You will feel like at home.
->A vi user understands the value of vi when he doesn't have vi with him.

Apollo

The best editor I ever used was on an Apollo workstation the DM Editor - it was graphical, intuitive and had a black background - which was nice. If I wanted to do anything special I would use vi - yes vi is the only thing that worked for me. The pleasure of vi is that its omnipotent... So no matter what system you use - if you know vi then you can do pretty much do everything you need to do. I must say I never really got round to vim - plain old vi - its all you need. Also if you needed anything heavy duty - sed was always on hand and if you knew vi you knew sed. It amazes me that vi still remains - at least 25 years later - the editor choice,

All good.Smilie

PHP CLI::vim and GUI::Gedit

I use vim to 'FIT IN' between *nix folks. But I honestly do not care. I am a computer consultant, and i have to work on Microsoft, Mac, Linux, AIX, HP, and sometimes cash registers running legacy systems.
I use whatever is there. On my machines, I use vim for sys-admin/network mngt, and when I'm done (speaking hypothatically of course) and it's time to work on a website, my 'prefered' editor is Gedit on GUI.
I do not engage in these 'holy-wars' (vim vs.emacs, SuSE vs. RedHat, Korn Shell vs. Bash, SUN vs. IBM)
I need to make a living, and whatever my client's machine is deploying, I'll use it. If you are in my position (self-employed, on the road) , you cannot afford to be that picky.
